Heya, my name is Joseph, and I’m proud to represent the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) at the National Youth Assembly 2025/2026.

I joined the Assembly because I’m passionate about youth empowerment and ensuring that young people’s voices are included in the decisions that affect our lives. I believe it’s important to influence government policy on key issues like climate change, rural development, public transport, and AI, while also developing my own interpersonal and public speaking skills. So far, I’ve been most passionate about Rural Development.

It’s an area that plays a huge role in shaping opportunities for young people across Ireland, and I feel strongly about driving positive change in this space. Being part of the Assembly has helped me grow both personally and professionally. I’ve developed skills in communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and youth advocacy, while also building my confidence, self-esteem, and sense of self-empowerment.

Working with young people from across Ireland has had a powerful impact on my perspective. It has strengthened my social awareness, encouraged active citizenship, and given me a real sense of belonging and purpose. Hearing different perspectives has inspired me with a sense of optimism and motivation to help create meaningful change. One of the highlights so far has been meeting the Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley. It was a great experience to engage directly with a policymaker and gain insight into how decisions are made and implemented.

I truly believe the Assembly is making a difference. It provides a platform for young people to influence policy, ensuring diverse voices are heard and represented in shaping the future. If I could give one piece of advice, it would be this: be open to the experience. Embrace learning, connect with others, and take every opportunity to grow. The Assembly is not just about personal development; it’s about helping to build a better future for everyone.
