Akshita's Journey with Comhairle na nÓg: Empowering Youth Leadership

Akshita’s involvement with Comhairle na nÓg began in tandem with her move to Ireland, marking a significant personal and professional milestone.

Elected in November 2021 as the National Executive Representative for Cork City Comhairle, Akshita joined a team of 31 representatives from across Ireland, dedicated to addressing national issues affecting young people.

Despite having lived in Ireland for only five months, Akshita was determined to represent Cork City’s views to the best of her ability. The national topic of focus during her term was ‘A more inclusive relationship and sexuality education’ in Ireland. Describing the topic as complex, dynamic, and fundamental for young people, Akshita found the experience transformative. She learned to advocate for human rights through this issue and even presented in September 2022 on why RSE should be delivered from a Human Rights Based Approach. Her presentation received recognition from notable figures including TD Jennifer Carroll, a DCU professor in Health Education, her local Comhairle, and support from other national executives.

This marked a significant step in their journey, as they aimed to recognise RSE as a Human Right. They believed it should not be left to schools and teachers to decide on behalf of young people, as it is an internationally protected human right by the UNCRC, WHO, and UN guidelines. By the end of their term, they made a proposal with five main action points and advocated this to an NCCA consultation reviewing the Senior Cycle SPHE curriculum. Akshita led the delegation presenting this proposal to the Secretary General of the Department of Education and the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth. She participated in several sub-committee meetings with representatives from NCCA, the Teaching Council, Inspectorate, various government departments, and policymakers. Through this, Akshita learned negotiation, policy analysis, research, advocacy, public speaking, and made lasting memories.

Akshita also had the pleasure of representing Cork City Comhairle at the Women For Elections 2023 event in Cork City Hall, which campaigned to get more women into politics. Akshita describes meeting role models and politicians like Senator Eileen Flynn, Leader of Social Democrats Holly Cairns, and Leader of the Opposition Mary Lou McDonald as a ‘surreal and motivating experience.’

She addressed the audience after Mary Lou McDonald which she found daunting but rewarding. In her speech, Akshita argued that societal differences in raising girls and boys lead to different career choices. Girls are often taught to be perfect while boys are encouraged to be brave and take risks, which are qualities needed in politics.

Akshita concluded her speech with a powerful message inspired by Maya Angelou: ‘I believe that the most important single thing, beyond discipline and creativity, is daring to dare.’ She encourages everyone to dare to make the choices they have always aspired to make. Akshita’s journey with Comhairle na nÓg has provided her with numerous opportunities, fostered her passions, and equipped her with invaluable skills for the future.
