The impact of drug and alcohol addiction across Ireland has been a growing issue over the past couple of years. Recognising this critical problem, Leitrim Comhairle na nÓg sought to develop an initiative that would have a positive impact not only on young people but also on their families. Mpact (Moving Parents and Children Together) is an organisation that provides vital support to young people and their families affected by addiction. Their program is delivered across Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, and West Cavan.

Engaging in conversations with Mpact and understanding the services they provided, Leitrim Comhairle na nÓg decided to help promote the organisation. The comhairle felt strongly that addiction is a very sensitive issue, and discretion was at the heart of their promotional efforts. They came up with the innovative idea of a QR code that could be placed in discreet locations such as bathrooms, ensuring that any young person or family member suffering could access support easily and anonymously. This QR code was distributed to schools, organisations, and businesses not only in Leitrim but also in all counties covered by Mpact. You can access the QR code here.

The hopeful long-term impact of this initiative is significant. By increasing awareness and providing easy access to support, it is anticipated that more young people and families will seek the help they need. The use of discreet QR codes ensures that individuals can reach out without fear of stigma or judgment. This innovative approach could set a precedent for other regions to adopt similar strategies, potentially leading to a nationwide increase in support for those affected by addiction.

Leitrim Comhairle na nÓg’s work is particularly important in raising awareness about drug and alcohol addiction and highlighting the availability of support services. Their efforts have been recognised with the Garda Youth Award Sligo/Leitrim 2023 and the National Youth and Participation Award 2023. These accolades underscore the impact and importance of their work. By promoting Mpact and making support more accessible, they are not only addressing immediate needs but also fostering a more supportive and understanding community. This initiative exemplifies the power of youth-led action in tackling societal issues and provides a model for future efforts in combating addiction across Ireland.
